Center to Center Peg Distance

Most looms are sized by the center to center peg distance known as the loom sett or gauge. So, to help you in choosing your next or first loom purchase we are offering you a little information about the different sizes of loom setts/gauges available. Remember the closer to peg distance the more pegs on the loom.

Adjustable Gauge Looms

There is one totally unique loom that has built it’s reputation as being the only adjustable gauge loom: The Kiss Loom. Visit their site for more information. They have excellent resources available and are always willing to help you find your next purchase.

Large Sett/Gauge Looms

Most mass-produced looms fall into this category, CinDWood Looms also has looms in this category with a peg distance of 3/4″ (12/16″) and 5/8 (10/16″). The center to center peg distance is greater than 5/8″ or 10/16″.

Regular Sett/Gauge Looms

DA Looms, CindWood Looms and Markman Farm Looms all offer looms with a center to center peg distance of 1/2″ or 8/16″.

Small Sett/Gauge or Extra Small Sett/Gauge

DA Looms, Markman Farm Looms and the non-adjustable sock loom from Authentic Knitting Board offer looms that have a center to center peg distance of 3/8″ (6/16″).

Authentic Knitting Board looms have a pin center to center peg distance of 5/16″

Fine Sett/Gauge Looms

DA Looms and Markman Farm Looms offer Fine Sett/Gauge looms with a center to center peg distance 1/4″ (4/16″).

Finding Center to Center Peg Distance

The following is Part I of II in categorizing the looms by the actual center to center peg distance.  We have started with mass-produced looms, that are readily available in most areas. This list is not all inclusive of all the looms on the market, but are a representation of my loom collection. We have detailed how we came to the C2C Peg Distance below. The majority of the looms on this part of the list are classified as Large Gauge Knitting Looms which means they have a C2C Peg Distance of 5/8″ and up.

Numbering the Pegs: We assumed that the first peg to the left of the anchor peg was peg 1 and the next peg was peg 2. When no anchor peg was available we randomly chose a peg 1.

The Measuring Process

Step 1: Measured the distance from the outside of peg 1 to the outside of peg 2.
Step 2: Measured the distance from the right of peg 1 to the left side of peg 1.
Step 3: The difference of Step 1 from Step 2 gives you the center to center peg distance.

These are the measurements in inches that we came up measuring each loom in my loom inventory. The handcrafted looms were measured only for peg size, since handcrafted looms are assumed to have a variable of peg distance throughout the loom. We have listed the handcrafted looms manufacturers claimed center to center peg distance when it was offered.

Newsboy Cap

Newsboy Cap

If you need a quick project this Newsboy Cap works up in about 2 hours. Using the Adult Hat Knifty Knitter and 2 strands of your favorite worsted weighted yarn you can make this adorable cap.

Cast on 1/3 of the pegs, using the Garter Stitch Shortcut, increase 1 peg on each side after each purl row, until you have 1/2 of all the pegs worked.  Then cast on the remaining pegs and work the Garter Stitch Shortcut for about 1″. Continue with a basic hat pattern, here we used the e-wrap stitch to continue the hat, until it reached 7-1/2″. Bind off using the Gather Bind Off Method.
Enjoy your Newsboy Cap. More varitions coming soon!
